How to choose the color of indicator lights?

The IEC 61439-1 standard indirectly covers indicator lights and push buttons by defining general requirements for safety, assembly, operation, and long-term performance.

They must be integrated into the panel by being:

  • properly mounted and connected (fixing, drilling, sealing),
  • clearly identified (labels, color codes, pictograms).

Unless otherwise specified in the applicable product standard, the colors of indicator lights and pushbuttons shall comply with IEC 60073.

Below is an extract of the main color codes covered by the IEC 60073 standard:

The color displayed by indicator lights must be selected according to the type of information to be communicated. Meanings shall be assigned to colors based on the control criterion, chosen in order of priority from the following:

  • safety of persons or the environment,
  • process condition,
  • status of equipment.
