The IP protection rating determines the degree of protection of the equipment against the ingress of solid objects (1st digit) and liquids (2nd digit).

Example

An IP45 rating protects against solid objects larger than 1 mm and water jets from all directions.

An IP2X rating corresponds to protection against solid objects larger than 12 mm. It is commonly referred to as finger safe protection.
