Summary
What is RE2020?
RE2020 is the new energy and environmental regulation for all new buildings. This regulation has been implemented by the French government, with the help of industry stakeholders. The aim of this unprecedented project is to take into account not only energy consumption in the regulation, but also carbon emissions, including those linked to the construction phase of the building.
What are the challenges of this project?
The challenge is therefore to design and build the future living spaces of French citizens whilepursuing three major objectives set by the government:
- a goal of energy efficiency and decarbonisation of energy,
- a reduction in carbon impact,
- a guarantee of comfort in the event of high temperatures.
In 2020, France is moving from a thermal regulation, RT2012, to an environmental regulation, RE2020, which is more ambitious and demanding for the sector. RE2020 is gradually replacing the 2012 thermal regulations (RT2012).
Who does this regulation apply to?
It applies first to buildings used for residential, office and primary or secondary education purposes, and is then extended to other building uses.
Finally, it applies either in full or with adapted requirements, depending on the exact configurations.
What is the deployment schedule?
It has been gradually coming into force since 1st January 2022, starting with residential buildings. Then, on 1st July 2022, it will apply to office buildings and primary and secondary schools.
How is energy performance taken into account?
RE2020 continues to improve energy performance and reduce consumptions in new buildings.
The five regulatory uses of RT2012 are still present, namely:
- heating,
- cooling,
- lighting,
- domestic hot water production,
- auxiliary equipment.
RE2020 adds to these pillars:
- mobility of occupants inside the building, such as lifts or escalators
- other auxiliary equipment such as car parks and common areas in multi-unit buildings.
The method for calculating energy performance therefore uses calculation algorithms that are identical or similar to those in RT2012, with a few adaptations and additions.
Definition
RE2020 = Environmental Regulations for new buildings.
RE2020 is the first energy and environmental regulation. It aims to improve the energy performance of new buildings, reduce their impact on the climate and adapt them to future climatic conditions.
