Summary
This European regulation makes the use of MID-certified energy meters mandatory in the case of electricity consumption rebilling.
What is the purpose of this directive?
It ensures that measuring instruments used in commercial contexts are reliable, accurate and fair for both consumers and suppliers.
The MID establishes the essential requirements that instruments must meet if they are subject to legal metrological control in any of the Member States.
These requirements include:
- measurement accuracy: under the specified operating conditions and in the absence of disturbance, the measurement error shall not exceed the maximum permissible errors (MPE) as defined in the specific requirements applicable to the instrument,
- the criteria for assessing meters: it also defines the different types of assessment to which they must be subjected at the time of their design, manufacture and commissioning,
- the sale of meters: finally, the MID ensures the free movement of regulated measuring instruments within EEC countries.
How can you recognise a MID meter?
MID meter bears a specific MID marking with an identification number from the notified body. The marking consists of the capital letter “M” (for Metrology) and the last two digits of the year in which it was affixed, surrounded by a rectangle. The height of the rectangle must be equal to the height of the ‘CE’ marking (minimum size 5 mm). This is followed by the number of the notified body (NB).
Below is an example of MID marking:
